Our goal? Continuously improve the performance of the 7 Belgian nuclear power plants and guarantee safety at all times. To do this, we continuously test, carry out maintenance and repair works and plan all kinds of projects. We are happy to share our plans for the future.
The first nuclear power plants in Belgium were started up in 1975. Since then, Electrabel strives to continuously improve the performance and safety of all power stations. When works are undertaken or investments made to keep guaranteeing nuclear safety on an ongoing basis, naturally the results and recommendations of the many inspections are taken into account.
The decommissioning of the Doel and Tihange power plants: a new industrial challenge in complete safety
The decommissioning will be a very large industrial and environmental project in Belgium. As a nuclear operator, it is our responsibility to see this through to a successful conclusion in a safe, humane, and environmentally friendly manner.

Extending the operation of the Doel and Tihange nuclear power plants is a major project. Electrabel is deploying all its nuclear expertise and professionalism to ensure a responsible restart and safe long-term operation.
New building for temporary storage of spent fuel in Doel and Tihange
At the sites of the nuclear power plants Doel and Tihange Electrabel is constructing a new building where reinforced containers with spent fuel elements can be temporarily stored. This building is named SF² (Spent Fuel Storage Facility) and is essential to be able to start the dismantling following the final shutdown of the power plants.
