How are Doel 4 and Tihange 3 being prepared for the extension?

Extension projects consist of 2 parts: an engineering phase and an implementation phase. The nuclear safety authorities keep a close eye on everything.

The study phase began in early 2023 and was completed at the end of 2024. During this study phase, for example, many parts of the facilities were inspected and analysed with a view to extending operation by 10 years.

Given the tight schedule for LTO projects, preparations for the implementation phase have already been made in parallel with this study phase, for example by contacting suppliers to order the components to be replaced.

The detailed scope and planning of that implementation phase will be further developed, taking into account the results of ongoing studies and the expectations of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control.

The extension of Doel 4 and Tihange 3 is a major and important project! Based on our current understanding, we expect an investment of EUR 1.6 to 2 billion being required for both plants.

Meanwhile, our greatest mission remains the safe and reliable production of electricity and the professional execution of the shutdown and dismantling of our nuclear power plants.
