How will Doel 4 and Tihange 3 be prepared for the extension?
The engineering phase already started early 2023 and should be completed by the end of 2024. In this engineering phase, for example, a lot of components from the installations are subjected to extra inspections and analyses with a view to a 10-year extended operation.
Given the challenging timeframe for these LTO projects, preparations for the subsequent implementation phase will already be made in parallel with this engineering phase (as a reminder: Electrabel has always communicated that any extension project normally lasts 5 years). This means, for example, that we have already started contacting suppliers to prepare orders for components that we will need to replace.
The detailed scope and planning of that implementation phase will be further developed, taking into account the results of ongoing studies and the expectations of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control.
We can give a few examples already, based on the initial analyses:
- replacement of turbine controls,
- replacement of various electric motors and panels,
- replacement of measurement systems,
- concrete work on the cooling towers,
- replacement of pump seals, etc.
The extension of Doel 4 and Tihange 3 is a major and important project! Based on our current understanding, we expect an investment of EUR 1.6 to 2 billion being required for both plants.
Meanwhile, our greatest mission remains the safe and reliable production of electricity and the professional execution of the shutdown and dismantling of our nuclear power plants.
